Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is the excessive transpiration, which strikes 1% of the population and has its first symptoms during childhood, normally becoming worse during adolescenthood. Incidence is the same for both men and women, however, excessive sweat is predominant in women.

When the nervous system carries out an abnormal condition of hyperactivity, it stimulates the sweat glands in certain parts of the body, causing them to produce a lot more sweat than necessary to regulate temperature.

Although the reasons why this occurs are not very clear, some individuals with intense sweating in of the hands, face, axils, and feet develop a condition called "social phobia", because they feel embarrassed and pressured, they increase the activity of the sympathetic nervous system, over which we do not have control. For these people, to handle paper or hold their beloved's hands becomes a reason for panic due to embarrassment.

Main affected areas:

- Face
- hands (palm hyperhidrosis)
- axils (axils hyperhidrosis)
- feet (sole hyperhidrosis)
- scalp (craniofacial hyperhidrosis)

Are the most affected spots. However, the cases are very specific, it being possible for other regions of the body to be affected.

Palliative Treatments:

In this kind of treatment, we use several techniques using deodorants, medications, and injections of botulinum toxin and iontophoresis.

Definitive treatments:

This kind of treatment is based on surgical intervention. We have two main methods; the first consists of the removal, through lipoaspiration, of the axils region, the sweat glands or we can opt for sympathectomy. The second procedure is done in a simple way lasting about 1 hour.

Under general anesthesia, two small incisions of 5mm are made on each side of the thorax.

The results are excellent and immediate, being 50% to the feet, 92% for axils, 96% for face and 97% for hands. This presents a great improvement in health and life quality. Surgery is not advisable for hyperhidrosis which is the result of the conditions which make sympathetic activity potent. People who suffer from hyperthyroidism, menopause, psychiatric disturbance, obesity, etc. suffer usually from sudoresis .
