Prostate cancer is the most common tumour among men who are over 50; about 40% of the diagnoses of cancer among men have their beginnings in the prostate. The older the person, the greater the chance of developing the disease, as in the next decades more men should live more than 50 years, it is expected more cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in about 24% of men.

The good news is that cancer can be cured if diagnosed at the beginning and it is easily controllable in most cases.

Risk factors in Prostate Cancer

According to the INCA (National Cancer Institute) age is one of the most important risk factors in case of prostate cancer.

Family history of disease. If a father or brother has suffered from the disease before the age of 60, the risk of cancer can be increased from 3 to 10 times in relation to the population in general.

There are no studies which prove that eating habits influence the development of cancer. However, we know that a diet rich in fruit, green salads, vegetables, grains and whole cereal s, and low in fat, not only reduces the risk of cancer but also other non-transmissible chronic diseases.

Prostate Cancer Symptoms

The prostate cancer in its initial stage is silent, not producing any noticeable symptoms. In the advanced stage the symptoms can be: bone pain, urinary symptoms, or, when more severe, generalised infections and renal insufficiency.

Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

The diagnosis of prostate cancer is done through a medical check-up by rectal examination and by a dosage of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA, acronym in English), which identifies the presence of the disease and, if necessary by a pelvic ultrasound. The last indicates if it is necessary to have a trans-rectal prostate biopsy.

It is important to know that prompt diagnosis is fundamental to the cure of prostate cancer. If you are over 45, it is important that you have your preventive medical check-up annually. The urologist specialist is qualified to do a quick check-up, and if there is any suspicion a trans-rectal prostate biopsy is done.

Prostate Cancer Treatment

We give preference to the radical treatment, surgical. this surgery, (radical prostatovesiculectomy), it lasts for about 2h, requires 3 days of day hospitalisation and about a month away from work.
