Renal calculus, popularly known as kidney stones, is a disease caused by the solid formation of mineral salt and other substances, which can appear in the urinary apparatus (kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra), causing extremely strong pains.

The disease is more common in men, having greater incidence among the age of 20-40.

Causes of Renal Calculus


The origin of the formation of renal calculus is not always known, nevertheless, it is known that various foods promote its formation in people who are susceptible. Little intake of liquid is also recognised as a collaborative cause.

History of renal calculus in the family may indicate that the person is prone to renal calculus. Urinary infections, renal and metabolic disturbances are also related to the formation of renal calculus; besides dehydration.

Renal Calculus Symptoms


Some people do not realise the existence of renal calculus, as a result, in some cases, it may be expelled along with the urine. However, when the formations are bigger, they can get stuck in the urinary ducts causing the famous acute abdominal dorsal or inferior abdominal pains.

Renal Calculus Treatment


Treatment for this kind of pathology consists, in some cases, in the intake of plenty of liquid, painkillers and medicines which help in the dissolution of the substances present in the urine, like the calculus. In others, the use of alternative is necessary, such as:

Lithotripsy:


It consists in the introduction of instruments through the urinary duct capable of removing or eliminating the stones without the necessity of surgery.

Extracorporeal Lithotripsy:


The patient is submitted to shock waves, which collaborate with the breakage of the calculus inside the kidneys.

This procedure is minimally invasive and presents excellent results.

Patients who present this condition should immediately look for a urologist, bearing in mind that the development of this problem can cause very serious damage to the health of the individual.
