Ears that stick out may cause nuisance and constraint. Genetic factors, or racial and family characteristics, have a preponderant role in establishing alterations in the shape of the ear.
This deformity may be corrected through a relatively simple plastic surgery named otoplasty. In this procedure, the plastic surgeon corrects the distance between the ears and head obtaining incredible results.
Plastic surgery may be done in the first months of life, but waiting until the child is seven years old is ideal. In this period, the ear is completely formed and almost the size it will become as an adult. Furthermore, as this is a school phase, psychological problems start, due to jokes made by other children, usually classmates. Though it can be done in childhood, treatment in adults is also common.
Diagnosis is made by the doctor, in cases in which the ear sticks out, only a clinical check-up is sufficient to arrive at a conclusion. Deformities are located fundamentally in two places: in the auricle part of the ear (the deep part of the ear) which is too elevated and in the anti-helix (the most protuberant part in the middle of the ear), which is not "well-designed."
In all these cases, the best solution is plastic surgery. As in all aesthetic surgery, prescription for treatment must derive from the patient him/herself, in other words, treatment for aesthetic deformities can only be done by self-prescription. Before the operation, the doctor will request lab tests to learn about any problems with anesthesia or sensibility to any of these products.

In general, this surgery is performed with local anesthesia, except for children who receive light general anesthesia and need to spend the whole day in hospital.

Children stay 24 hours in hospital, while adults are discharged on the same day in this kind of procedure.

The scar of this surgery is imperceptible, due to the fact that it is located behind the ear, the sulcus formed by it and the cranium. Besides, as this is a very fine skin region, the scar itself tends to become invisible as time goes by.

Plastic surgery complications in otoplasty are rare. The commonest are: hematomas, infection and hypertrophic scar.

On the first day after the surgery, the patient has his/her head completely bandaged, with only the face free. This dressing, gauze and ligature remains from 3-5 days, depending on your doctor´s advice.
The only special care is to wear bandage, like the one tennis players and ballerinas wear, in bed, for 30 days. This bandage prevents the ear from folding when in contact with the pillow.
