Mentoplasty

For whom this is prescribed

The chin is an important element for the harmony of the face. In other words, if the person’s chin is more prominent or receded, it is can be an embarrassment. These deformities in the chin may be caused by anomalies in the growth or deformities caused by traumas or diseases. This is why, nowadays, there are plastic surgeries which restructure this region and offer a more symmetrical and natural shape to the face.

The plastic surgery of the chin is called mentoplasty and it is recommended for people older than 15/17, bearing in mind that it depends on the completion of the bone formation of this cartilage region.

Surgical Technique

The commonest mentoplasty, plastic surgery in the chin, is the one which restructures the receded chin, through the inclusion of a silicon set or a bone segment taken from the jaw. The choice between one or other technique depends on the anatomic conditions of the patient.

For those who have a prominent chin, the surgical technique consists of removing the excessive bone segment which makes the chin protrude and the face more harmonious.

Hospitalisation Length

The plastic surgery varies form 1-2 hours and the internalization length is usually six hours.

It is important to have routine medical check-ups. Medications whose bases are acetylsalicylic acid mustn´t be taken – for example: aspirin, doril, ASS – because the substance may increase bleeding.

Scar

In some other cases the incision is internal so the intervention does not leave scars. When a scar is necessary, it is only a small mark, almost imperceptible, in the inferior part of the chin. Besides, it is a very small thing for such a big change in your appearance.

Post-operative care

After the surgery a bandage is put on to keep the prosthesis high or place the jaw in the correct place. This bandage also serves as a kind of protection against any accident which may happen in the first days. Removal of stitches is done after one week.

A calm post-operatory is recommended. When brushing the teeth, it is important to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid brisk movements. Activities may be resumed from 2 to 5 days after the operation.
