The augmentation mammoplasty, better known as mammary prosthesisis a plastic surgery of better notability due to the impact it offers and the recovery is fast. It is prescribed for patients who have small mammas or, after breastfeeding, had a reduction of the mamma.

Surgical techniques of mamma prosthesis placement

There are 3 ways of placing the prosthesis in the mamma: via inframammary (through the mamma sulcus) axillary (through the axilla) or periarolar (through the areola). The prosthesismay be located in two different places: beneath the muscle or beneath the glands.

Each surgical technique of placing the mammary prosthesis has its advantages and disadvantages. The doctor should decide along with the patient which the best to be used in each case is.

Types of mammary prosthesis

There aredifferent kinds and models of mammary prosthesis which are chosen according to the patient´s type of mamma and the method through which the prosthesis will be placed: beneath the muscle or beneath the glands.

The prosthesis may vary in profile, content and pack. The prosthesis profile corresponds to the shape the patient wants the mamma to be after the plastic surgery. The prosthesis may be round. (Low, moderate and high), or anatomic (the shape of a drop). The profile of the mamma defines the projection of the mamma after surgery.

The content of the prosthesis may be of silicon or physiologic serum (these are the saline prosthesis). The prosthesis pack may be textured or smooth.

The best choice of the mammary prosthesis must be made through a doctor´s appointment, when the surgeon will point the best solution for each patient.

Hospitalisation time

The patient is admitted in Hospital Anália Franco in the morning, undergoes the procedures usually under epidural anaesthesia and sedation, or even with local anaesthesia and sedation. The procedure lasts about one hour and the patient returns to the room, being discharged on the same day.

Complications of the mamma prosthesis surgery

The complications of the mammoplasty surgery are rare. However, the commonest are: hematomas, infection, prosthesis extrusion, problems with anaesthesia and the contracting of the capsule which is formed around the mamma prosthesis.

Post-Operative cares

The post-operatory of the surgical plastic of mammoplasty of mamma´s augmentation is not painful and it is also very tranquil. It is recommended that effort should not be made using the arms for a month and only wet the scar after 48 hours.
